The first tiny house built by Nature’s Nest Tiny Home Company is taking shape! Last month we wrapped up the exterior of the tiny house. There are still little projects left on the outside include the installation of the soffits, painting the trim, painting the door, and touching up paint on the trailer. It took a total of two months to build the exterior of the home. Now we are onto the interior.

The interior planning has taken more reconsideration than expected. The main decision that has been holding up the interior building is deciding which heating source to select. There was juggle between propane and wood. After some consideration and planning, it became clear that wood was the best option (considering propane needed almost just as much clearance anyways). Currently we are working finalizing the interior planning. There have been a few things moved around in order to open the space up.

Plumbing has also been another hindrance to the progression of this project. Initially the plumbing was going to be outsource; however, to stay within budget we decided it would be best to do the plumbing ourselves. We have decided to go with a propane water heater (on-demand) and a 45 gallon freshwater holding tank. The toilet will be Natures Head. The shower will be a water trough. Stay tuned for pictures of our interior building!

Build Quest: Building the Walls

Wrapping up the Exterior

Currently we are finishing up exterior items such as installing the soffits, installing the vents in the soffits, siding the house with shingles, finishing the storage unit located on the front of the trailer, installing exterior lights, and painting the trim work. As we are wrapping up the exterior, we are making our way inside the house. The next phase of the house is building the interior of the home.

Items that need to be considered in this next phase are where exactly all of the utility systems will go. (I must note that before building the house this was decided. However, after more contemplating and reflecting, there are a couple of essentials that need to be moved around in the tiny house, including the water storage, breaker box, and grey-water system outlet.) In moments like these where things need to be moved around, I remember the words of Ella from Little Yellow Door during a workshop she held with Tumbleweed Tiny Homes, “Don’t be married to your floorplan.” This advice has served me well throughout this process, especially when considering window (re)placement.

Build Quest: Building the Subfloor

The subfloor serves as the layer upon which your whole house is built. This step is crucial in creating a level, sturdy surface to the rest of the house to sit on. After configuring which Rvalue of insulation would work good in the tiny house, we waded through the different insulation options from spray foam to blue jean. This determined what size floor joists we would be using (2 x 4 or 2 x 6).

Three day building workshop with Deek Diedricksen in Putnam, CT!

It was my honor to have had the experience in a workshop with Deek Diedricksen, the infamous man behind Relax Shacks! He’s a notable influencer of the tiny house movement, inspiring individuals in various ways to get creative, thrifty, and dirty. During the three day workshop we built a cabin for the Empty Spaces Project in Putnam, CT. The cabin had a shed roof, reclaimed door, reclaimed slider door as a window, polycarbonate TV window, dismantled bunk bed for seating, and other features of the home that truly made the cabin itself a work of it.

Knowing More About the Tiny House Movement

A tiny house is more than just a place to rest your head at night. The tiny house movement is a life style. Supplying the individual with the basic essentials to meet their needs. A simple lifestyle allows the individual to live more freely. In a nutshell, the tiny house movement frees individuals from the chains of normal living standards by society. These normal living standards met by society are attached to excessive mortgage, interest, and utility payments. By adjusting our lifestyle to a “tiny” life, we have the capacity to decrease our environmental footprint, free ourselves from the demands of money, and free our time. Ultimately it gives us more time to find ourselves and do what makes us truly happy. The question that beckons, is, what are you willing to give up in order to life a minimalist life?

Author’s thoughts: “On this tiny build journey I’m about to embark on, I’m prepared to embrace what the tiny house movement entails. I know there will be unforeseen challenges, but that is the excitement of the journey. I’m aware that minimizing my belongings will be a troublesome task at hand, as I have many cherished items from my younger years. I’m looking for insight from other builders/dwellers of the unexpected corners of living the tiny house movement.”
